Open Thread 135

It's time once again for our regular open thread. Talk about whatever you want, so long as it isn't Culture War.

Since the last discord meetup worked quite well, I'm going to hold another one next weekend, 7/29, at 1 PM Central (GMT-6). Discord link is in the sidebar if you want to join, or if you just want to hang out in the regular channel.

Overhauls are Signalling Part 4 and for 2022, Corrosion at Sea and my review of Hornet.

President Biden has nominated Admiral Lisa Franchetti to be the next Chief of Naval Operations, replacing Mark Gilday, whose term ends this fall.

Adm. Franchetti would be the first female CNO.

Nit: the (latest) USS Canberra was launched in late 2021, in Alabama. Ships are launched well before completion, to free up space in the shipyard while you do all the fitting out. Then sea trials, then commissioning as a formality. Apparently, "sea trials" can include sailing halfway around the world.

Nice gesture, I suppose, but the last time we commissioned a "USS Canberra", it was a heavy cruiser. Were I an Aussie, I'd be offended by anything less than a Burke :-)

We don't name Burkes after cities, although given the degeneration of naming rules, I'm sure that will happen soon. At least it was an Independence, and thus will be around for more than half a dozen years.

USS Canberra isn't named after the city of Canberra, it's named after HMAS Canberra. I think we can stretch the definition of "naval heroes" that far at least.

I know bean doesn't think much of the LCS, but this Aussie is happy with the new USS Canbera. The Independence class are built by Australian-founded Austal, and they are very distinctive and memorable. USS Canberra looks like a spaceship visiting Sydney Harbour rather than a warship.

At the same time, the US Navy committed another first, christening a foreign country. Australia will henceforth be known as "USS Brostralia"
